Air Sealing vs. Insulation: What's the Difference and Which Do You Need?
One of the most common mistakes homeowners make is adding insulation to fix a draft problem. Insulation and air sealing are related — but they solve different problems. Understanding the difference helps you spend your improvement budget where it will actually make a difference.
What Insulation Does
Insulation slows the transfer of heat through building materials. It works by trapping air in small pockets — reducing conductive and convective heat flow through walls, ceilings, and floors. More insulation means slower heat transfer. But insulation does not stop air movement.
What Air Sealing Does
Air sealing addresses the gaps, cracks, and penetrations in the building envelope that allow air to move between the inside and outside of the home. These pathways can be around electrical outlets, plumbing penetrations, recessed lights, attic hatches, top plates, rim joists, and dozens of other locations. When air moves through these gaps, it carries heat (or cold) with it — bypassing the insulation entirely.
Why Adding Insulation Doesn't Always Fix Drafts
If you feel a draft near an outlet or window, that's air movement — not a lack of insulation. Adding insulation to the attic won't stop air from moving through a gap in the wall. The draft is caused by a pressure difference between inside and outside, and air is finding a path through the building envelope. Sealing those pathways is what stops the draft.

Air sealing and insulation are most effective when done together. Air sealing stops the movement of air through the building envelope. Insulation slows the transfer of heat through the building materials. A home that is well air-sealed but poorly insulated will still lose heat through the walls and ceiling. A home that is well insulated but poorly air-sealed will still have drafts and comfort problems. The best building-performance improvements address both.
How Do You Know Which You Need?
In most existing homes, both are needed to some degree. The question is which is contributing more to the symptoms you're experiencing. A blower door test can quantify how much air leakage exists. Thermal imaging can help identify where the leakage is occurring. A professional evaluation can help prioritize the improvements that will have the most impact in your specific home.
